Oxidative Stress

Every day our bodies produce energy, fight infection, repair tissues and respond to the world around us. These normal processes also create highly reactive molecules often called free radicals. When these molecules build up faster than the body can control them, oxidative stress occurs.

A Simple Analogy

Imagine a campfire. A controlled fire provides warmth and light. If sparks begin landing everywhere and nobody controls them, damage follows. Oxidative stress is similar. Our cells naturally produce 'sparks' and our antioxidant systems normally keep them under control.

Why It Matters

Persistent oxidative stress can damage fats, proteins and DNA inside cells. Over many years it has been linked with ageing and a range of chronic diseases. Oxidative stress is not a disease itself but one process that may contribute to declining health.

Your Body Is Designed to Protect Itself

The body has powerful antioxidant enzymes and repair systems that work continuously. The aim is not to eliminate free radicals completely—they are also useful—but to keep them in balance.

Lifestyle Factors

Smoking, poor nutrition, obesity, chronic inflammation, poor sleep, excessive alcohol, pollution and ongoing stress may all increase oxidative stress. Regular exercise briefly increases oxidative stress but strengthens the body's natural defences over time.

Redox Signalling

Redox signalling is not a new or obscure idea. It is an established field of biology that has been studied for decades. In fact, there has been a dedicated peer-reviewed scientific journal, Antioxidants & Redox Signaling, since 1999, and it has been indexed in MEDLINE/PubMed from its first volume.

Many thousands of scientific papers have explored the role of redox signalling in areas such as ageing, cardiovascular disease, immunity, exercise physiology, wound healing, cancer and mitochondrial biology. That does not mean every proposed intervention has been proven effective, but it does show that the underlying biology is recognised as an important area of modern biomedical research.

The biology of redox signalling is well established. Research continues into interventions designed to support these natural signalling pathways. As with any emerging area of health science, it is worth asking three questions: Is the underlying biology sound? What evidence supports the specific intervention? And does that evidence justify its cost and expected benefits?

Eat a balanced diet rich in whole foods, stay physically active, sleep well, avoid smoking, limit excessive alcohol, manage stress and work with your healthcare professional to manage chronic conditions.

Oxidative stress is a normal part of life. What matters is maintaining a healthy balance. Everyday lifestyle choices can support the body's own remarkable defence systems and help promote better long-term health.
