Most people know that nerves carry electrical signals throughout the body and that hormones travel through the bloodstream to regulate many bodily functions. These communication systems are well known, but they are only part of a much bigger picture.

What many people don't realise is that every second of every day, trillions of cells are also communicating directly with one another. Without this constant exchange of information, your body simply could not function.

This remarkable process is known as cell signalling, and one of its most important forms is redox signalling.

Imagine a busy city where nobody can communicate. Police cannot report emergencies. Builders don't know what needs repairing. Delivery drivers have no idea where supplies are needed. Your body is remarkably similar. Every cell constantly receives and sends information so it knows when to repair, produce energy, divide or call for help.

For many years scientists believed reactive oxygen species were simply harmful molecules. We now know that, in healthy amounts, many of these molecules act as chemical messengers. This is known as redox signalling and it helps regulate immunity, tissue repair, inflammation, adaptation to exercise and energy production.

Healthy redox signalling depends on balance. Your body needs these signalling molecules, but when they overwhelm natural antioxidant defences, oxidative stress can occur.

Research into redox signalling has expanded rapidly. Scientists are investigating its role in healthy ageing, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, exercise physiology, wound healing, immunity and many other fields. Understanding the biology is different from proving that any specific intervention works, and that distinction is important.

Redox signalling reminds us that our bodies are far more sophisticated than we once imagined. Rather than thinking of free radicals as simply good or bad, modern science encourages us to think in terms of balance supported by good nutrition, regular exercise, restorative sleep and healthy lifestyle habits.
