Can Antioxidants Really Slow Ageing? Separating Fact from Fiction

If you've spent any time looking at health supplements, you've probably seen bold claims that antioxidants can slow ageing, prevent disease and even extend your lifespan. It sounds appealing, but the reality is more complicated.

Antioxidants are essential for good health. They help protect our cells from excessive oxidative stress by neutralising unstable molecules known as free radicals. However, the key word is excessive. Your body actually needs a certain amount of oxidative stress to function normally. It plays an important role in immunity, exercise adaptation, wound healing and normal cell signalling.

What are antioxidants?

Antioxidants are substances that donate electrons to free radicals, helping to prevent unnecessary damage to cells. Your body naturally produces its own antioxidants, while many foods provide additional protection.

Common dietary antioxidants include vitamin C, vitamin E, beta-carotene, selenium and polyphenols found in berries, tea, coffee and cocoa. Together they help maintain balance rather than eliminating oxidative stress completely.

More is not always better

One of the biggest misconceptions is that taking large doses of antioxidant supplements must automatically improve health.

Research has shown this is not necessarily true. In some studies, very high-dose antioxidant supplements have provided little benefit and, in certain situations, may even interfere with the body's normal adaptive processes.

For example, exercise temporarily increases oxidative stress. That mild increase is one of the signals that tells your muscles to become stronger and more efficient. Blunting that response with large doses of supplements may reduce some of the benefits of training.

Redox signalling: an emerging piece of the puzzle

Scientists are increasingly studying the role of redox signalling in maintaining health and healthy ageing. While antioxidants help limit excessive oxidative damage, redox signalling molecules act more like messengers, helping cells communicate with one another and respond to changes in their environment.

These signalling pathways help regulate many important processes, including the body's own antioxidant defences, immune responses, tissue repair and energy production. Researchers are investigating how disruptions to normal redox signalling may contribute to ageing and a range of chronic diseases.

Although this field is advancing rapidly, much remains to be learned. Current evidence suggests that maintaining healthy redox balance involves far more than simply consuming large amounts of antioxidants. Instead, good nutrition, regular physical activity, adequate sleep and other healthy lifestyle habits appear to support both the body's natural antioxidant systems and the complex signalling processes that help keep our cells functioning normally.

Food first

The strongest evidence consistently supports obtaining antioxidants from a varied diet rather than relying on supplements.

Fruit, vegetables, nuts, herbs, spices, legumes and other quality plant foods provide thousands of naturally occurring compounds that work together in ways supplements cannot fully replicate. Rather than searching for a single 'superfood', aim for variety and colour across your meals.

Lifestyle matters more

No antioxidant supplement can compensate for poor lifestyle habits.

The biggest influences on healthy ageing remain regular physical activity, adequate sleep, not smoking, maintaining a healthy body weight, managing stress and eating a balanced diet rich in nutritious foods. These habits reduce excessive oxidative stress while allowing your body to maintain the balance it needs.

The bottom line

Antioxidants are an important part of healthy ageing, but they are not a magic bullet.

Your body needs balance, not the complete removal of oxidative stress. For most people, the best strategy is to obtain antioxidants naturally through a varied diet while focusing on the everyday lifestyle habits that have consistently been shown to support long-term health.
