Oxidative stress is often described as something harmful that should be eliminated. In reality, it is a normal part of life. Every cell in your body produces reactive oxygen species (ROS) as it creates energy, fights infection and responds to its environment. The challenge is not to remove these molecules completely, but to maintain a healthy balance between their production and your body's ability to control and use them.
When that balance is lost for long periods, oxidative stress may contribute to damage of proteins, fats and DNA, and is associated with ageing and many chronic diseases. Understanding what causes oxidative stress helps us make informed lifestyle choices rather than chasing miracle cures.
When Does Oxidative Stress Become a Problem?
Your body produces reactive oxygen species every day through breathing, converting food into energy, exercising and fighting infections. These molecules are not simply 'bad'; they also act as important signalling molecules that help cells adapt and communicate.
Problems arise when production of reactive oxygen species consistently exceeds the body's natural antioxidant and repair systems. Smoking, poor diet, obesity, chronic psychological stress, inadequate sleep, excessive UV exposure, pollution and some chronic diseases can all contribute.
Exercise temporarily increases oxidative stress, but that is not necessarily a bad thing. This temporary increase stimulates the body to strengthen its own antioxidant defences and repair systems. Regular, appropriate exercise is an example of beneficial stress. Excessive training without adequate recovery is a different story.
Your body has sophisticated antioxidant enzymes and repair mechanisms that work continuously. A diet rich in vegetables, fruit, nuts, seeds and other minimally processed foods provides nutrients that support these natural systems. Good sleep, regular physical activity and avoiding smoking are equally important.
No single supplement can replace healthy lifestyle habits. While some supplements have specific medical uses, the strongest evidence still supports a balanced diet, regular exercise, healthy body weight, good sleep and effective stress management as the foundations of reducing excessive oxidative stress.
